Relative Clauses

&

Esquema

ü El pronombre relativo that puede sustituir a who (personas) y a which (animales y cosas.

A pessimist is a man who looks round for a coffin when he smells flowers

§ Which: se utiliza para animales y cosas

Conscience is the inner voice which warns us that someone may be looking (H.L. Mencken)

  • That: puede sustituir a los dos anteriores

This is the woman who/that I saw last week

Paul hasn’t paid me back the money which/that I lent him last month

That will be the day when I finish my task

This is the house where Mozart was born

§ Whose: es el pronombre relativo-posesivo. (NO SE PUEDE OMITIR EN NINGÚN CASO)

This is the man whose daughter lives next door to you

Omisión del pronombre relativo en inglés

El pronombre relativo (who/which/that) se podrá omitir cuando no funcione como sujeto.

This is the woman I saw last week

Paul hasn’t paid me back the money I lent him last month

All the students who work hard pass this subject

Características de las oraciones de relativo explicativas
(Non-defining Relative Sentences)

&

Esquema

ü El pronombre relativo that NO puede sustituir a who (personas) y a which (animales y cosas.

x Shakespeare, that wrote Hamlet, was a great poet

ü Shakespeare, who wrote Hamlet, was a great poet

x Lichtenstein, that is a very small country, is situated between Switzerland and Austria.

ü Lichtenstein, which is a very small country, is situated between Switzerland and Austria.

FUTURE TENSES

1. Future Simple (también llamado ‘futuro de will’)

  • Predicciones:
It will rain tomorrow
It is going to rain tomorrow.
I think that he will come next Sunday
He will probably pass this subject
  • Decisiones tomadas en el momento de hablar:
(Suena el teléfono) I’ll answer ---- Yo contesto
Do you know Mary has had a baby?
No, I don’t. I’ll visit her in a few days.
Do you know Mary has had a baby?
Yes, I do. I’m going to visit her in a few days.
  • Promesas y amenazas:
I’ll pay you tomorrow
Do that again and I’ll kill you
  • 1st conditional
If I pass every subject, my parents will buy me a motorbike
  • Ofrecimientos personales (will/shall)
    1. Directos: I’ll open the door for you
    2. Indirectos: Shall I open the door for you?
  • Sugerencias (shall):
Shall we go to the cinema? = Why don’t we go to the cinema = Let’s go to the cinema
2. ‘Going to’ Future

(Hay nubarrones en el cielo) It is going to rain
I’m going to write a letter to my friends in London
I am meeting Susan this evening
They are travelling to France next month
The train leaves at 9:30
What time does the coach arrive in Victoria Station?
The Queen opens a new hospital tomorrow at 10:30

5. Futuro Continuo

Complementos

the report tomorrow at
10 o’clock
Tomorrow at 11:30 I will be watching TV
COMPÁRESE CON
Yesterday at 11:30 I was sleeping
6. Futuro Perfecto

the report tomorrow at

In 2 weeks’ time I will have finished the project
Dentro de 2 semanas habré acabado el proyecto
